The ingredients needed to make Malabar Chicken Curry:
- Prepare 500 gm chicken
- Take 3 chopped onions
- Make ready 2 chopped tomatoes
- Prepare 1 cup coconut milk

- Prepare 2 tsp coriander powder

- Make ready 2 tsp lime juice
- Prepare 1/2 cup water
Malabar Varutharacha chicken curry is the most traditional way of chicken curry prepared in kozhikode area. The gravy has made freshly roasted coconut and some flavorful spices. So fragrant and so tasty dish. This Varutharacha chicken curry is a Malabari delicacy.
Instructions to make Malabar Chicken Curry:
- Marinate the chicken pieces with lime juice, salt, chilli powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder and set aside 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pan over medium high heat.. Add mustard seeds, cloves, cardamoms, Cinnamon and curry leaves saute them for few minutes.
- Add chopped onions and fry until golden brown.
- Add chopped tomatoes and saute for few minutes.
- When the colour changes, add ginger and garlic paste and saute again until aromat.
- Then add marinated chicken and mix well. Add 1/2 cup water for it to cook, and cover it for 10 - 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes open the lid and add 1 cup thick coconut milk. Mix it well and cook for few minutes.
- After few minutes add garam masala powder and mix well.
- Cook for 3 -4 minutes and turn off the stove.
- Ready to serve Malabar Chicken Curry.
It goes well with pathiri, kerala porotta, any sort of rice variants , chapathi. The best part of this Malabar chicken curry is its rich, luscious sauce or gravy. The creamy sauce alongside the subtle spices, and of course the tender chicken. It's very similar to a basic chicken curry. Allow the Onions to turn a little brown in color.
